Me dieron mi primer Valium en el funeral de mi padre, cuando solo ten\u00eda 16 a\u00f1os. Me hizo sentir mejor, as\u00ed que empec\u00e9 a tomar medicamentos para controlar mis sentimientos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cre\u00e9 un gran negocio de \u00e9xito, me cas\u00e9 y adoptamos dos hijos a los que ador\u00e1bamos. En apariencia, lo ten\u00eda todo – una familia estupenda, viviendas en el Reino Unido y en otros pa\u00edses, pero en realidad no era feliz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A los 34 a\u00f1os empec\u00e9 a consumir coca\u00edna y, un par de a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, hero\u00edna, y mi vida empez\u00f3 a desmoronarse. Lo perd\u00ed todo: mi matrimonio, mis hijos, mi negocio, mi salud y mis amigos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Durante los cuatro a\u00f1os siguientes, entr\u00e9 y sal\u00ed de lugares como The Priory m\u00e1s de 20 veces, estuve en consultas de psiquiatras y me somet\u00ed a terapia electroconvulsiva (TEC), y tratamientos del sue\u00f1o, entre otros.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empec\u00e9 a falsificar recetas, por lo que me detuvieron cinco veces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fui a mi primer centro de rehabilitaci\u00f3n a los 41 a\u00f1os porque no ten\u00eda otro sitio donde dormir. Me dijeron que pod\u00eda pagarlo cuando me pusiera bien.  Pas\u00e9 la noche anterior en una celda, a la que llegu\u00e9 con todo lo que ten\u00eda en una bolsa de basura negra. En aquel momento, no hab\u00eda estado limpio ni un solo d\u00eda desde el funeral de mi padre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iniciar el tratamiento fue lo m\u00e1s duro que he hecho nunca. Las primeras semanas s\u00f3lo me qued\u00e9 porque no ten\u00eda ning\u00fan lugar donde acudir. Mi ex mujer me hab\u00eda llamado diciendo que no pod\u00eda hablar con mis hijos porque les hab\u00eda prometido cosas que nunca ocurrir\u00edan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All\u00ed me sent\u00ed m\u00e1s fuerte f\u00edsicamente y tambi\u00e9n emocionalmente, al darme cuenta de que no era el \u00fanico padre adicto que se comportaba de ese modo, a pesar de querer a mis hijos. Incluso me re\u00ed por primera vez en a\u00f1os. No estaba solo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A medida que me acercaba al final del tratamiento, esperaba que ocurriera algo bueno. \u00bfUn peque\u00f1o hogar quiz\u00e1s? \u00bfUn trabajo quiz\u00e1s? \u00bfVer a mis hijos los domingos? Que mi madre volviera a estar orgullosa de m\u00ed. \u00bfViajar? Incluso me atrev\u00ed a albergar la esperanza de conocer a alguien y compartir nuestras vidas sin drogas ni situaciones t\u00f3xicas ni destructivas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El d\u00eda que sal\u00ed del centro, me comentaron que me hab\u00eda ganado el derecho a volver a ser padre. Tambi\u00e9n me dijeron que pod\u00eda tener la vida que quisiera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me qued\u00e9 cerca del centro unos meses antes de volver a Londres, donde viv\u00ed en un piso min\u00fasculo en un edificio alto en una zona dif\u00edcil. Consegu\u00ed trabajo transportando telas en un almac\u00e9n. Estaba limpio y sobrio, pero era pobre y a menudo pasaba hambre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Todos en mi familia estaban enfadados conmigo. Pensaba que estar\u00edan orgullosos de m\u00ed porque por fin estaba limpio. Mi madre y yo hab\u00edamos estado muy unidos, pero se avergonzaba de m\u00ed. Me confes\u00f3 que me prefer\u00eda cuando me drogaba. Mi ex mujer descarg\u00f3 toda su rabia hacia m\u00ed, pon\u00eda excusas e impedimentos con las visitas y les contaba a mis hijos todo lo que hab\u00eda hecho. Asimismo, inventaba mentiras y mis antiguos amigos me hab\u00edan rechazado tambi\u00e9n. No hab\u00eda ido a un supermercado en mi vida y no sab\u00eda cocinar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me mantuve limpio, pero estaba enfadado y sent\u00eda celos, (sobre todo hacia mis hermanos porque eran exitosos), y empec\u00e9 a perder la esperanza de nuevo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un d\u00eda tuve una discusi\u00f3n con mi hijo y me fui a casa, segu\u00eda furioso con \u00e9l. Ese fue el punto de inflexi\u00f3n para m\u00ed y me di cuenta de que, aunque estaba recuperado, me odiaba a m\u00ed mismo y comprend\u00ed que ten\u00eda que cambiar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inmediatamente busqu\u00e9 terapeutas y finalmente encontr\u00e9 a Liz. S\u00f3lo pod\u00eda permitirme una sesi\u00f3n al mes, pero ella me introdujo en un grupo mixto de personas, todas ellas estaban en fase de recuperaci\u00f3n. Al cabo de unas semanas empec\u00e9 a confiar y a comprometerme, recibiendo ayuda en todas las \u00e1reas de mi vida y comprend\u00ed que la comunicaci\u00f3n era lo m\u00e1s importante de todo. Durante los dos a\u00f1os siguientes, todo comenz\u00f3 a mejorar. En el trabajo, me ascendieron a director del departamento de exportaci\u00f3n, lo que supuso un aumento de sueldo y un coche. Con respecto a mi familia,  el grupo me ayud\u00f3 a aprender que pod\u00eda decir que no de vez en cuando y a poder comunicarme con ellos con sinceridad. Aprend\u00ed a manejar el dinero, nunca hab\u00eda vivido solo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

El tiempo que pas\u00e9 en terapia tambi\u00e9n me ense\u00f1\u00f3 que ten\u00eda una actitud malsana hacia las mujeres, que no pod\u00eda ni deb\u00eda tener una relaci\u00f3n. Durante mis primeras vacaciones de recuperaci\u00f3n en Espa\u00f1a conoc\u00ed a Zalyia<\/a>. Llevamos juntos m\u00e1s de 30 a\u00f1os y tenemos una hija, Ali<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El tiempo que pas\u00e9 en terapia me devolvi\u00f3 la vida y el sentido de m\u00ed mismo. Me he mantenido limpio durante m\u00e1s de 30 a\u00f1os, y he dedicado ese tiempo a transmitir el mensaje a quienes a\u00fan sufren. The Bridge es un sue\u00f1o hecho realidad: la forma perfecta de devolver la vida a las personas que m\u00e1s ayuda necesitan.
